Day 24: Cock or Squat??

We’ve had a lazy morning snoozing on the sofa but he’s not going to improve his walking if we spend all day like this as tempting as it is!

We’ve got food to cook, legs to stretch and new fields to walk.

Yesterday Lloris was having some half hearted attempts at ‘cocking his leg’ to pee. I would LOVE him to remaster this as currently he pees all over him self which = stinky pup!

So did he manage it today?… take a look?

We did meet a lovely, well behaved little Shih Tzu whilst out on our rambles; Lloris was on the lead and for him, (much like many other dogs I’m sure) he has lead rage! So he decides he wants to change personally and act the big aggressive dog but keeps falling over whilst doing so (oh dear). The little ShihTzu merely looks up in disgust and trotts on passed not giving him the time of day.

Lloris was going berserk, and getting himself all upset. He’s waited 23 Days to meet another dog to intimidate and this dog has just laughed at him!

It’s about time he learnt that being a bully is not cool!

Getting a little carried away with this phenomenal speed of his recovery, I decide to indulge him in a bit of ‘off-lead walking’

He’s having a ball! FREEDOM!!

It‘s time to head back home but he’s having none of it. Point blank refusing to get near the car!

I’m currently driving him the 1 minute up the road to our soft ground walks. He is still dragging that right foot and scuffing it, so the tarmac/concrete paths and roads are too much of a hazard for him. Plus I don’t want to tire him out before we get to the fun bit!

We had an unfortunate incident with fox poop during the whole FREEDOM thing (I say no more), so back in the bath to freshen up and soak the dirt from that battered right paw.

I’ve invested in a non-slip bath mat as he does look a little panicked at the slippery surface.

The Holistic Vet suggested I include egg shell in Lloris’s home cooked diet, so today I’ve come up with a recipe.

Ingredients:

(will make 7 pots of food - he eats 3/4 pots per day)

8 x 50% low fat sausages

3 x handfuls of Fusilli pasta

Bowl of Mixed Vegetables

4 x eggs inc shells

1/2 tub Cottage Cheese

2 heaped table spoons of lactose free yoghurt

Supplements:

2 x teaspoons Bone Marrow

Handful of ground flaxseed

2 x teaspoons of Xiao Hua Luo Dan

  • I cooked the sausages in the air fryer.

  • I make scrambled egg (but without the milk) in the microwave

  • I cut up the egg shell into tiny pieces with scissors

  • Mix all ingredients together and it’s all ready for potting up and storing in the fridge ready for serving.

Now for the taste test … will he like the new crunch??

I’d say another thumbs up from the pup! Although wasn’t eaten quite as enthusiastically as the pork liver!

This morning’s workout has taken it out of him and he’s very sleepy all afternoon. So I’ve let him have cuddles on the sofa with the laser machine on his back and I’m massaging his tired little legs.

Observation of today;

I’m not convinced he knows when a poop is coming or evening happening.

Prior to surgery he has always been a little shy with pooping. Takes himself away and will stop if he thinks you’re looking at him! (he does have manners don’t you know!) But now, he’s running along with it coming out of him and doesn’t seem to overly notice.

Not sure how we solve this one or if it will improve with time ? Luckily now I can take him out this is occurring outside and not under his pillow!

I would love to be signing off Day 17 by saying “we’ve had an in-house accident free day”… but I would be telling a big fat fib!

THANK YOU’s

Whilst it goes without saying that a big chunk of credit for Lloris’s rehabilitation to being a walking puppy dog again goes unquestionably to him! There have been many helping hands along the way that are more than deserving of a mention …

Thank you to;

Davies Vet (Johnny & Alex) for their remarkable surgery, prompt action and after care. He came home a calm and happy dog…even if his legs weren’t working…his wound has healed remarkably well without scaring.

To Dr Rinnert van den Bergh - The Holistic Vet who never raised an eyebrow at his little accidents and always progressed him further after every treatment.  Lloris is especially grateful for the liver paste you would win him over with!

To Nisha from Paws & Hooves - Hydrotherapy.  You have been remarkable in your patience with Lloris. Thank you for answering the phone when many others didn’t that day.  Finding you was meant to be.

To Willow Vets in Newport Pagnell who took Lloris on as a new case for his cancer straight away and operated within two days. The entire team of staff have been nothing but kind and professional and whilst Lloris will continue to hate you all (hate may be a bit of strong word…. But I’m not so sure?!) I on the other hand think you are all amazing.

To his Uncle Cristian for building his ‘Frenchie Bouncer’ was a big game changer in our rehab!

To his Grandad for building his Pig Pen which he has grown to love

To his Nanny for his the daily love and company not to mention the endless cleaning of him and my house!  We truly couldn’t have got through this without you, you gave me the break I needed to keep my sanity.

To Matt the Chippy for his back door ramp!

To the IVDD Facebook support group.  I learned so much from you. https://www.facebook.com/groups/178483559398659/?ref=share

To my friends and family who reached out to help me. Everyone of you that messaged, read our blog and paid an interest in both his and my well being made such a difference on both the dark days and the light.   Lloris loves people so the visits and gifts all lifted his spirits and snapped him out of the sulks!

To Dan, Lloris’s dad. You stepped up when he needed you the most and answered our cry for help to get him to the hospital that day.  It will always be a shame we couldn’t stay the family unit we had wanted for him. We certainly tried!  Thank you for letting him live with me, I can’t imagine the heartache of giving him up.

To the friend in my life that gave me focus from day 1 when I asked for help bringing him home … he said something like  “I have the dentist so can’t help you that day, I would if I could but … you’re going to have to get used to handling him and lugging him about on your own, so you may as well just get on with it now”. I thought he was being an unhelpful arse at the time but actually that was the best piece of advice I could have been given. Man up and get on with it.  You can’t turn back time or change anything. You are where you are, so take a deep breath and in the words of Nike - Just do it.

And that we did!
